OHAKUNE is located in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand just over 4 hours drive from Auckland and 3 hours drive from Wellington. Situated at the foot of the mystical giant MOUNT RUAPEHU Ohakune is the closest town for accommodation, après ski and exciting night life and also services the TUROA ski field which is only a 20 minute drive to the ski field car park. The WHAKAPAPA ski field is just 20 additional minutes drive around the mountain.
Whakapapa Ski Area has 7 chairlifts, 3 T-Bars, 3 Platters and 2 Learners Tows 30 groomed trails and an impressive variety of off-piste areas .The ski field is professionally patrolled and also includes full ski and snowboard lessons catering for all levels.
TUROA means THE GIANT. The Ski Area is impressive it consists of 1300 acres of groomed trails serviced by 11 lifts including an express 6 seater chair. There is also 4 main off-piste areas for more advanced skiers and boarders, one of the runs is 4 kilometres long , a dedicated terrain park for snowboarders and free-skiers and an excellent learner’s area called Alpine Meadow. Full international standard ski school facilities operate for both skiers and snow boarders catering for all levels. Turoa field offers fabulous glacier skiing and snowboarding, and the upper limit of 2,322 metres makes it the highest ski area south of the equator The altitude, and the southwest facing slopes usually mean heaps of dry snow from July to September, and good amounts of light spring powder in October.
